Shown here is an 1866 eruption on the island of Santorini (formerly known as Thera). The island has experienced several volcanic events throughout history, and its modern horseshoe shape is even a consequence of the famed eruption that occurred around 1500 BCE.
The story of Atlantisâs fall and the actual events that ruined the Minoan civilization are very similar. It is possible that the ancient Greeks knew that Plato was drawing upon this historical event in his fictional account. Another theory is that retellings of the eruption from sources in nearby Egypt may also have influenced Plato.
The Atlantis legend might also have had ties to stories later passed down in the Hebrew Bible, including the stories of Noah and the Flood. The biblical plagues of Egypt may also have had similar historical roots.
